ROTF Rollbar Toy Review

Individual Review

Name: Rollbar
Series: Movie Tie-ins
Allegiance: Autobot
Alternate Mode: Delivery Van

Height: 4cm Length: 9.5cm Width: 3.5cm

A grey UPS-style van with dark blue towards the back and on the bullbar at the front, Rollbar has black painted windows and the front and sides along with black plastic wheels - four at the back and two at the front. His headlights and additional lights on top are painted yellow while there is a silver Autobot logo on the left side of the bonnet. There's a yellow and red star/bull logo on the side which, along with the grey and blue, really reminds of the Red Bull energy drink brand - which I suspect is deliberate. It's a nice colour scheme even if it's a little dull - the blue and grey work well together and it's kept simple and realistic.

I have no idea if this is an actual model of delivery can, but Rollbar certainly looks like something you'd see on the road - faux logo aside. There are some hinges on the sides which aren't very attractive but are something I can forgive at this size. The rear end is a little broken up, but much of it is still a loading gate. There are sculpted mirrors on the doors and sculpted sliding hatches towards the rear - like those found on cash delivery trucks. As you might expect of a scout, there's no real play value here - the wheels roll and that's about it. I'm quite happy with realism over some gimmick, mind you.

A simple but attractive delivery van mode, Rollbar is quite realistic - which is helped by the Red Bull inspired colours. The play value is quite minimal but it'd be asking a lot from a realistic scout at this level to include a gimmick without impacting on the mode. As with many movie toys, Rollbar's alternate mode is something we've not seen before as a Transformer - which is always a welcome aspect in any toy.

Fold back panels on either side of the truck, detach the loading gate piece and swing down a little to form his legs. Split the roof and fold out to the sides, rotate the rear section up and the front backwards to form his torso - the rear section becomes

's chestplate. Fold down the sliding door panels on his chest, straighten the legs and lift out the arms.

Height: 11cm Width: 6.5cm

A grey robot with dark blue boots and forearms, a dark blue head and a twotone blue chest, Rollbar has a silver mouthplate and yellow eyes. There's a black Autobot logo on the outside of his left boot, on a mid blue panel. It's a good colour scheme thanks to a good set of colours.

There's very little truck here - those panels on his chest is all we see, really. The roof halves sit behind his arms as kibble of sort while the front of the truck is on his back. The waist, arms and legs are all very well sculpted and while there's no paint to bring out this detailing it's impressive on a scout all the same. The head, with its navy blue and silver mouthplate, resembles that G1 Optimus Prime.

Again Rollbar lacks gimmicks, instead focusing on detail. Having said that Rollbar's poseability is pretty good. His head turns while his shoulders swing at lift out to the sides. His elbows, knees and hips are ball jointed and while his arms can't swing back due to the roof halves, the overall poseability is pretty good. His ankles are fixed but there are hinge-like structures there. Rollbar is easy to stand thanks to large feet but his range of dynamic poses is limited due to the weight on his back. One aspect of this robot mode which does disappoint me is the total lack of a weapon - hists fists are moulded solid without holes in them.

A good robot mode with nice colours, solid poseability and a great sculpt. A weapon of some sort would be nice and there's precious little of the truck mode here, but it's still a good effort.

   None that I'm aware of.

A good scout with good colour scheme, lots of attention to detail and an unusual vehicle mode, Rollbar lacks a little in his play value but is still a worthwhile figure. The robot mode has its shortcomings but for the price of a scout he's worth picking up - 8/10
