Prime Commander Bulkhead Toy Review

Individual Review

Name: Bulkhead
Series: TF Prime
Allegiance: Autobot
Alternate Mode: Armoured Truck

Height: 4.5cm Length: 8.5cm Width: 4.5cm

A green armoured truck with dull brown tyres & windows, Bulkhead has some transparent blue on his hood and roof while the headlights are painted silver and the taillights red. There's some pine green painted around the side windows - which is notably darker than the mid green base of the truck. The mace weapon on his roof is transparent blue, even if the windows aren't. There are no Autobot logos on this truck and the transparent plastic not featuring on his windows is unusual, but the colour scheme works nicely despite this.

This is a solid little truck, with a fair bit of compact undercarriage bulk (it's kibble but adds to his bulk). The shape works well and the toy looks massive even if he's not actually heavy. The sculpt is fairly detailed although the actual details aren't that specific. There's minimal play value - you can attach/detach the mace and his wheels roll - that's it.

A good vehicle mode despite being a very straightforward one. The colours works well, the detailing is decent and while there's nothing that really stands out there, I don't expect a whole lot at this pricepoint. As it is, this is his weaker mode.

Remove & set aside the weapon, if attached. Flip back the back edge of the roof, split the rear and swing out to the sides, forming arms & revealing his head. Rotate the forearms into place, swing back the rear wheels & attach the mace on either forearm. Unclip the feet underneath the hood, Pivot the hood up to form his chest, which swings the legs into place. Rotate the feet, stand him up and you're done.

Height: 8.5cm Width: 9cm

A green robot with brown feet, hands and a brown groin, Bulkhead has a silver face including an oversized lower jaw (shades of Animated where this character concept originated). There's some transparent blue panelling on his chest (from the hood of the vehicle), and the mace on his forearm is also transparent blue. Despite the blue, silver and brown, Bulkhead is mainly green - which is what we expect of a Bulkhead toy, really. There are brown Autobot logos stamped on either forearm, rounding out a good colour scheme.

While it's hard to get bulk at this small size, the effect is realised thanks to very wide shoulders & big upper arms. He's not as squat as the Animated version of this character - which I like - he's bulky without being a character. In fact this bodyshape works well and there's no kibble really.

Bulkhead's play value is very simple, which is to be expected at this size class. The mace can clip into holes on either forearm (actually, wrist) as mentioned. There's a second post at the end allowing it to fit into either hand as a handheld weapon. There are additional holes mid forearm and on the upper arms, so you can plug it in using that handle-post at these locations - not that it makes any sense - but I guess other weapons from within the Prime line might work in those sports. His poseability is good despite some shortcomings. The shoulders, elbows and hips are ball jointed while the knees and ankles are hinged. The waist is fixed and the head might as well be - it can wiggle from side to slide slightly. There's enough poseability for dynamic poses so I'm happy.

A good robot mode for a Commander toy - Bulkhead has a good colour scheme, weapon options, good poseability and is well engineered without kibble & a suitable bodyshape. It's an understated but very well put together robot mode, and doesn't have any real flaws.

   None that I'm aware of.

An excellent toy with two good modes, an elegant transformation and about as much play value as we're going to see at this size. Both modes display well and I like the shift away from the slightly silly shape of the Animated character while still retaining the overly buff look. The colours & vehicle mode are subtle, so at a glance this toy might seem uninteresting, but he's so well done that he's spectacular - 10/10
