Firecracker Toy Review

Individual Review

Name: Firecracker
Series: Generation 2
Allegiance: Autobot
Function: Rapid Assault
Alternate Mode: Lamborghini Diablo

Height: 2cm Length: 7cm Width: 3cm

A transparent red sports car, Firecracker is very similar to Gobot Optimus Prime, who is a solid red. Both have black windows, plastic black tyres and gold painted hubcaps. Firecracker has yellow tailpipes on the back, but aside from the mufflers, wheels and windows, he's completely red. The transparent plastic is thick enough that it has a smokey feel to it, so rather than clearly seeing the details underneath, you see shadows of them. It works quite well, although it's very unrealistic (which probably goes without saying).

The moulding detail's pretty good for a toy this size, although he's not quite a detailed as some Gobots since Diablos are inherently sleek. He has door seams, side mirrors, an engine grill behind the rear window, pop-up headlights, taillights, air intakes on the sides and even front indicators. The clear plastic renders most of the details invisible, but they are there if you look for them.

As with all Gobots, Firecracker has front and rear axles, and can roll quite well, and is designed to fit into Hot Wheels tracks. That's about all for the play value, but for a $4 toy I'm not complaining.

A decent mould, the transparent plastic give him a darkish, shadowy, feel, and it works better than a lot of transparent plastic applications in Transformers. It also makes him distinct from Gobot Optimus Prime, who's a lot lighter.

Pretty simple. Pull down the rear to form the legs, fold down the hood to form the chest, pull out the arms.

Height: 7cm Width: 4.5cm

Now with a red chest, red arms, white thighs and yellow shins and feet, Firecracker has a white head with a blue face. The transparent plastic's smokey look means he avoids looking silly in robot mode as many Transformers with transparent plastic do. The white head also separates him from Optimus Prime. The darker red means he actually has a better colour scheme than Prime, although the detail of his facial mould shows up poorly when doused in blue paint, so Prime has the advantage there.

Like all Gobots, Firecracker's got a fairly bulky chest and shortish arms. He has a transparent red gun, and yellow feet formed from the tailpipes of the car mode. There's not really too many other features that stand out here, but I'll mention the feet since they don't protrude forward at all and he has a tendency to fall forward. Play value is limited to the shoulders rotating - standard for a Gobot.

Excuse the endless comparisons with his predecessor, but they're very much alike in this mode. Still, Firecracker's robot mode looks good in it's own right. It's just a shame it tends to topple forward.

None, but the mould has been used several times - Optimus Prime as mentioned, Gobot Sideswipe and R.E.V..

One of the better Gobot moulds, Firecracker is in a way a variant of Gobot Optimus Prime, but isn't held back by character baggage like Prime is. The dark transparent red works, despite the fact you'd never find a Diablo in that colour. It also works with the robot mode's colours. The only major flaw is the stability issue he has in robot mode - 7/10
