DOTM Commander Megatron Toy Review

Individual Review

Name: Megatron
Series: Movie Tie-ins
Allegiance: Decepticon
Alternate Mode: Tanker Truck

Height: 4cm Length: 9cm Width: 3.5cm

A muddy brown truck with a silver tank on the back and silver fuel tanks on the sides. Megatron has six dark grey tyres. He has a dark grey grille and dark grey exhausts. His windows are black, along with the stamped Decepticon logo on the left side of the truck. This is one of the dullest colour schemes we've seen on a Transformer, but it's realistic enough for a functional sort of vehicle like this, so I don't mind so much.

This is a well armoured truck complete with rivets on the sides. He also features running lights on the roof. The word "MACK" sits on his grille (the truck brand). The tank is shorter than these things usually are, no doubt because of the small size of this toy.

There's minimal play value here - the wheels roll and the tank can detach if you like. It's actually possible to arm him with the compound weapon that his tank becomes, but it'll point out the back which is pretty useless.

A good truck mode with quite a bit of detail. The play value is minimal, but I don't expect much of a tanker truck of this size. The colours are incredibly dull but realistic enough.

Detach and set aside the tank. Fold down the rear of the cabin onto the hitch, pull back the hitch to form his boots (the sleeper section will become his thighs). Rotate the boots, fold the groin into position. Pull the front fenders out to form his arms, fold down his forearms. Swing the grille down to form his chest, revealing his head. Split the tank, fold the barrels out from each half and place into either hand.

Height: 10cm Width: 7cm

A brown robot with a grey chest, grey feet, grey hands and a grey face with red eyes. The silver fuel tanks are on the outsides of his wrists and the silver of larger tank is now part of his weapons. There's no Decepticon logo here, and again it's a very dull colour scheme.

The colour scheme gives Megatron a sort of generic look, but there are some distinctive features here. His hands are crab-like claws and the grille on his chest is quite prominent. His face is asymmetrical with the right eye bigger than the left one. There's no poncho here, unlike on the larger toy.

The guns clip into his hands in a fairly interesting way. There are handles within the silver tank-halves, so they look kind of like gloves - well gloves that support the guns. The tank halves can clip together - as can the guns - to form a fairly good compound weapon.

The poseability is pretty good here, and allows for Megatron to stand in relaxed poses and various gun wielding positions. His head is hinged allowing it to move back and forward while the waist is fixed. His shoulders, hips and elbows are ball jointed while the latter also have hinges. The knees are hinged with rotators. Interestingly, the knees don't completely straighten out. At the same time his heels actually sit lower than his feet, so Megatron is designed to crouch slightly.

A well designed robot mode with good poseability and versatile weapons. Okay, so Megatron's colours are dull as cardboard and there's no poncho, but Megatron's robot mode still works well.

   None that I'm aware of.

A very well engineered toy with mind-numbingly dull colours. Both modes are detailed and the transformation impresses me, so Megatron works well despite his colours. Given that Megatron is such a pivotal character in the film, he's easy to recommend if you like smaller Transformers - 8/10
