Cliffjumper Toy Review

Individual Review

Name: Cliffjumper
Series: Generation 1
Allegiance: Autobot
Function: Warrior
Alternate Mode: Porsche 944

Height: 3cm Length: 5cm Width: 4cm

A small red (or yellow) superdeformed, 2-door hatchback. The 944 itself is a sports car, but Cliffjumper's deformed, so he's more of a hatchback in shape. He's got a black rear bumper, black windows, black trim along the bottom of the sides and a silver panel on the back. The tyres are rubber and the wheels chromed silver. The earlier Cliffjumpers had a silver Autobot symbol on the roof, later ones had a rubsign. Both my red & yellow ones have the Autobot logo. He has a silver sticker on the back panel with various coloured bits on it. He has a spoiler on the back.

The toy's play value is limited to rolling along on it's wheels. Without any axles, Cliffjumper doesn't roll very far when simply pushed, but rolls fine when guided by a hand. The rubber tyres provide some traction, so you can make him do controlled cornering and other tricks. The level of detail is pretty good for a toy this age and size.

Identical to Bumblebee, Hubcap and Bumblejumper. Pull out the front of the car and fold up to form the feet. Lift up the rear panel to reveal the head. Pull the wheels out from the sides to form the arms.

Height: 8cm Width: 5.5cm

A red robot with black arms & legs (but red or yellow feet). He's got a silver face, with good moulded detail. He's got an Autobot symbol (or rubsign) on his chest and wheels attached to his arms. It's a fairly nice robot mode, but the show portrayed him as red & grey rather than red & black, so he's not all that show accurate. Still, he looks like the show Cliffjumper - and the toy came first anyway, technically.

Poseability is limited to swivel joints at the shoulders, which is standard for the Minicars. He's not necessarily better or worse than the others of this design, but it's a pretty good design, and the robot mode works well.

Released in red, but also very common in yellow - due to Hasbro buying lots of Microman excess stock and putting it in Transformers packaging. Both red & yellow look quite nice, although red is the media-accurate version. Hubcap is a retooling of this mould, and has no spoiler and a different head. Hubcap's rear bumper is taller and unpainted, also.

Cliffjumper was available in blue in Mexico and The Netherlands (possibly other northern European countries, also). He was released in Brazil in gold and blue - I'm not sure if it's the same blue as the other markets, but it has different stickers

If you like the Minicars as I do, then I'd suggest you'll like Cliffjumper. A cute car mode, a well done robot mode and good colour scheme (ok, schemes) all make him worthwhile to a G1 collector. His only real failing relates to the poetic license Sunbow took when adapting his colours to the cartoon. Even considering that, I give him 8/10
