JET MODE
Height: 2.5cm Length: 9cm Width: 6.5cm

A grey F-15 with navy blue on his tailfins and nose, red wingtips and air intakes and a black canopy. Starscream's colours match those of the original pretty closely. Aside from the loss of die-cast metal this is a good replica of the original, down to the Decepticon logos on his wings and the gap between the engines. The wings sit closer to his fuselage than those on the original do (relatively speaking), representing an improvement, but the gap between the engines is proportionally huge now.

As with a lot of Smallest Transformers - and the original seekers - Starscream has quite a few removable parts. The wings as well as the bombs underneath them, the tailfins and the engines themselves are all removable. The front landing gear of the original was removable, but on this toy it folds away. Instead the engines detach, which I suspect is done to give the robot mode some poseability in his legs.

The play value is really quite limited, but not really much less than the original. The bombs are no longer missile launchers, instead they're moulded with short bombs. The canopy no longer opens but he gains the fold-away front wheel.

A pretty good effort, if a slightly large alt mode for a toy in this line. Having said that Starscream's jet mode is always going to be less compact than a car of the same mass. Aside from the gap between the engines, it's a great scaling down of the original. Of course, as with the original, there's an awful lot of detachable stuff can be lost.

TRANSFORMATION TO ROBOT MODE

More or less identical to the original, although now the landing gear folds away instead of detaching. I should mention that getting it back out for the reverse transform is _really_ tricky, the notch you have to grip is tiny. Otherwise this is nothing new for Starscream - his hands still have to be added on for the robot mode.

ROBOT MODE
Height: 6cm Width: 6.5cm

Like his jet mode, Starscream's robot mode is grey with some blue and red. His chest and the shoulder pylons are red while his feet and hands are blue. His head is black with a grey painted face and red eyes while the black canopy sits on his chest. The Decepticon logos on his wings are still visible on the wings which hang off his hips, the air intakes sit on his shoulders as you'd expect and the bombs sit on his shoulders as blasters.

I'm not a fan of the hollow shins Starscream ends up with and we don't have the option of longer missiles (well, longer tips) to represent Starscream's null ray, but otherwise this is a decent little robot mode. As you might expect, the wide gap between the engines means there's a wider gap between his legs now than on the original, and it does look good in this mode. I'm not sure the trade off for the vehicle mode is worth it, but that's beside the point here. The proportions are all good, and everything works similar to the original.

The poseability is pretty good for the size - the shoulders are on ball joints which function like the original shoulders and the hips rotate, which is something new to this version of Starscream. These two sets of joints really represent most of the play value, but considering the quality of the replica, I'm happy with the play value of this toy.

VARIATIONS

None that I'm aware of, but Thrust is a repaint and retool of Starscream - without a conehead option.

OVERALL

A great replication at this scale, Starscream sports some improvements compared his larger original as well as some new flaws. My main issues are the wide gap between the engines and the array of parts that can be misplaced (notably the fists), but despite these I still think it's a wonderful reproduction of an iconic G1 character - 8/10
