Name: Onslaught
Series: Generations
Allegiance: Decepticon
Alternate Mode: Cybertronian Truck

TRUCK MODE
Height: 6cm Length: 11cm Width: 9cm

A yellow truck with purple camouflage, a purple twin cannon on top, large black tyres on yellow wheels and a black psuedo-cabin window at the front, Onslaught evokes the colours of G2 Onslaught quite well. There are a couple of silver strips on the front but overall the yellow & purple dominate. Unlike some of the Fall of Cybertron G2 Combaticons, the purple camouflage doesn't carry over any seams - but that's mainly because it simply doesn't need to. It's a garish colour scheme but one that matches that of the G2 toy itself nicely.

This truck is a short, wide affair. It's a bulky Cybertronian truck. It's not really much like the original Onslaught mould, save for the twin cannon on top. There's some visible kibble in this mode, sadly - there are combiner pegs on the front hubcaps & hanging on the rear end, Bruticus's groinplate is also visible in the centre of the the truck - and it crudely conceals the Bruticus head (the face is covered at least).

Play value is very limited here. His wheels roll and that's it. The cannon can detach, but doing so only reveals the robot forearms underneath.

A rather compromised vehicle mode. While the bits that are dedicated to this mode (at the front, mostly) work okay & the colour scheme works well as G2 Bruticus, it really fails to shine as it's just carrying too much combining kibble.

TRANSFORMATION TO ROBOT MODE

Detach and set aside the cannon. Fold the rear down, lift up the forearms & rotate away Bruticus's head. Rotate the front fenders to form his upper arms & pivot the elbows into place. Unclip the large groinplate & swing up behind Onslaught's groin. Fold the rear ends of the truck down to form boots, place the cannon piece in either hand as a handgun and you're done.

ROBOT MODE
Height: 15cm Width: 9.5cm

A yellow robot with purple thighs & forearms, a purple head with fluorescent red eyes & some purple camouflage on his chest. Onslaught has black elbows & hands, some black & silver on his torso & a purple groin. The colour scheme is similar to (and in some ways better than) that of G2 Onslaught; and overall this is a pretty nice colour map. There's a black G2 Decepticon logo stamped on his chest right below the head, which is also visible on the vehicle mode (it's above the window).

While the vehicle mode suffers aesthetically for the combined mode, Onslaught's robot mode makes fewer compromises. There are still some shortcomings here, but nothing jumps right out and says "I combine!". Those combining pegs on the front wheels are on his shoulders but don't really stand out now. The groinplate on his back is visible but unobtrusive. The rear wheels on the inside of his knees are more prominent, actually. His bodyshape is actually quite good, although there's no gap between his shoulders and torso. The boots look good and his head is similar to that of G1/G2 Onslaught.

Play value here is limited to his weapon & poseability. His head and waist both turn - albeit both are restricted. His shoulders swing while his elbows are ball jointed with hinges. The hips have two ratcheting joints each allowing them to swing & lift out to the sides. The knees are hinged with rotators just below the hips. His ankles and wrists are fixed. Onslaught's feet are moulded so that his legs are splayed slightly. The purple twin cannon forms his handgun and can sit in either hand. It can also clip onto the small posts on the outside of either forearm - which works fairly well although it's designed for vehicle mode & I think it works better in hand. The leg poseability is very good although his arm poseability is very limited.

This is easily his better mode; although the vehicle mode does set a low bar. The poseability is decent but the colour scheme & layout work very well making this an attractive robot mode. Nothing jumps out but overall this is a solid robot mode & a good one for a combining toy.

VARIATIONS

None that I'm aware of. He's a recolour of the Comicon Onslaught & "regular" FOC Onslaught. Impactor also shares the mould (with a retooled head and extra weapon).

OVERALL

With a kibbly vehicle mode that almost feels like an afterthought & a visually impressive robot mode, Onslaught is a mixed bag. He's very good for a toy that gives quite a lot to a combined toy - he does form Bruticus's core after all. The colours work well and this toy does capture the character well. I'd actually recommend this toy separately on the strength of the robot mode, but only mildly. As a combiner he does a good job - 7/10
