CAR MODE

   A silver and white sleek looking racer with transparent blue headlights, windshield and tyres. There are some hints of mid blue and orange here and there, which along with the transparent blue are the base colours of the toy. I don't think I've ever seen another transformer with so much paint on it - maybe 20% of Clocker is unpainted in this mode. The only toys that come close are G2 Hubcap & G2 Bumblebee. The white, silver and two blues work well together and there's but a hint of orange, giving Clocker a good colour scheme.

   There are some great aspects to this vehicle mode. Other than the sleek, open roofed vehicle which suits the Speed Planet theme perfectly, Clocker has twin mid blue moulded seats inside his cabin, three large silver exhaust pipes on the doors (think Hot Rod) and small winglets on the back. There's a small Autobot logo stamped on his bonnet - I guess they had to make it small since there's a lot happening here for a basic.

   The play value here is pretty good for a basic car without axles. Clocker doesn't roll so well but all four wheels to turn easily. Inserting his Planet Key (code: s129) into the back of the engine block behind the cabin will cause it's sides (and the winglets) to spring up, allowing you to swing out orange cannons, which will happily sit on either side of the cabin if you remove the key and fold the sides back down - my preferred weapon option. The engine block really impresses me - unlike many weapons that attach in vehicle mode it looks like it belongs, it's been a while since we've seen one this well executed (Heavy Load of RiD to be exact).

   For some reason the card draws attention to the fact the exhausts are removable, like it's some great feature. Granted, it's not bad, but I don't see why it's so special. Removing the engine block and exhausts leaves a somewhat bare looking convertible, which isn't awful but it's not as cool as Clocker with the trims.

   I like this car mode a lot more than I thought I would. The details here are impressive, the weapon is great and the colours good (although the red planet key is better left off). The fact that there's so much paint leaves him awfully susceptible to paint wear, while the removable exhausts might get lost - although the latter fit firmly and there's no real reason to leave them aside.

TRANSFORMATION TO ROBOT MODE

   Remove the engine block, open the panels underneath the back of the car and flip out the back to form his legs, then close the panels again. Swing the doors down to form his arms and unfold the forearms. Fold back the front of the car, swing out his shoulderblades, rotate the head and attach shoulderblades to the chest. Give Clocker his gun and you're done.

ROBOT MODE

   Remember that mid blue and orange plastic so scarce on the car mode? Well it's in full force now. The head and upper arms are mid blue with the groin, forearms and thighs orange. The chest and boots are painted white while his face and waist are silver and the feet black. The face is fairly detailed for that of a basic, with nifty transparent blue eyes (no lightpipe since the front of the car sits behind the head). The colour scheme works fairly well, although the extra orange and presence of some red paint makes this mode's colours a little less appealing that the car mode.

   There's a G1 feel about this mode, from the Hot Rod like exhausts on the back of his forearms to the generally square shape of the toy. The three solid colour mix also feels very G1, as do the boots and feet. The fist holes are the exhaust attachment points, although the gun can still fit if the exhausts are in place. Detaching them will allow you to see through the holes, but there's not really anywhere else for the pipes to go, so you might as well leave them. Adding to the G1 feel are some car features visible here - the front of the car sticks out a little as a backpack/hood, the rear tyres sit on his boots and the seats are on the elbows.

   Clocker again has good play value. The gun is fully functional, although again I recommend against leaving the key inserted. Visually it works well with the sides up or down, I prefer them up now since it's a little more compact and allows more arm movement. The shoulders and hips are ball joints, the head and waist turn while the elbows and knees are hinged. The calf panels work as heelspurs, which explains why they bothered with them on a basic sized toy (they're rare even on large Transformers). The articulation gives Clocker a lot of meaningful movement, with tightish shoulders the only real downside.

   The colours aren't quite as nice as those of his car mode but the poseability is great and the engine block does a great job of being a gun rather than a lump with barrels. This robot mode should appeal to G1 fans, with the added bonus of articulation.

VARIATIONS

   None that I'm aware of. Swerve is a repaint of Clocker. Cheetor and Tigatron from BotCon 2006 are retoolings of Clocker. There is also a Movie line toy of the same name.

OVERALL

   I was pleasantly surprised by Clocker. Generally I'm not grabbing much of Cybertron, simply because there are few Earthen alt modes, but both modes look great and wouldn't look out of place in a 1986/1987 catalogue save for the poseability of his robot mode. Both modes have a lot of play value, and the engine block gun does a great job of adapting to both modes, rare for a weapon that deploys in both modes. Clocker even scores a brand new name (something far more common in Cybertron than Energon or copyright-proctective Armada), and is a toy I definitely recommend - 8.5/10
